Interview prep for professional and corporate roles
Professional interviews go deeper. Expect several rounds, detailed questions about your results, and a close look at how you think and lead.
What interviewers look for
- Results you can explain. What changed because of your work, and by how much.
- Technical depth. The knowledge, designation or licence the role requires.
- Judgment. How you weigh trade-offs and make decisions with incomplete information.
- Working style. How you communicate with leadership, peers and the people you manage.
Structuring your stories
For each major example, cover four things: the situation, what you were responsible for, what you did, and the result. Keep each story to about two minutes. Prepare five or six that you can adapt: a turnaround, a conflict, a failure, a process you improved, and a time you led without authority.
Questions you are likely to hear
- Walk me through your career and why you are looking. Keep it to a few minutes and end on why this role.
- Tell me about your biggest professional accomplishment. Give numbers and your specific contribution.
- Describe a time you disagreed with a decision. Show that you argued your case respectfully and then supported the outcome.
- How would you approach your first ninety days? Listen, learn the business, then propose priorities.
- What are your compensation expectations? Know your range and be ready to discuss the full package.
Licences, designations and references
Have your designation or licence details ready (CPA, CIP, LLQP or whatever the role needs), including your good standing. Prepare references who have seen you work recently and who can speak to specific results. Tell them to expect a call.
Questions worth asking
- Why is the role open, and what would success look like in the first year?
- Who does the role report to, and how does the team work together?
- What are the biggest challenges the business is facing?
- What does the interview process look like from here?
After the interview
Send a personalized thank-you to each person you met, within a day. Reinforce one point you want them to remember. If you are in several processes, tell your recruiter so timelines can be coordinated.
MapleGate recruiters brief candidates before each interview and share what we know about the team and the process. Candidates never pay us. Register your resume to get started.
